NBA

Jamal Shead, the Houston Cougars point guard, is reaching new heights in his basketball career thanks to the unconditional support of his parents, Evlin and Lysa. They are always there for him, never missing an opportunity to cheer him on.

The NABC Defensive Player of the Year had his father, Evlin, as his first coach. It played a crucial role in shaping the fundamentals of basketball within him. He is a projected second-round pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Furthermore, Jamal is part of a sports family; his elder brother, Jaylen, and elder sister, Autumn, have also left their mark in basketball. Their influence, particularly his brother’s, has been crucial in Jamal’s decision to pursue a basketball career.

Meet Jamal Shead’s Parents, Elvin And Lysa Shead: They Served In The Army

Jamal’s parents, Evlin and Lysa, are U.S. Army veterans. Evlin served four years, and Lysa served two years for their country. Furthermore, his father was deployed in Somalia and served in the National Guard for two years.

Following their military service, the couple’s dedication to community service led them to establish the Capital City Youth Association in Manor in 2006. This non-profit organization has since been busy developing sports programs that positively impact Austin’s youth.

Evlin Shead, a maintenance supervisor for the Manor Independent School District, has a long history of involvement in sports. In the late 1980s, he played basketball and football at A.S. Johnston High School. His passion for sports and community service led him to coach his sons and Austin’s youth, a role he still plays.

Evlin’s coaching extends beyond the sports field. He has dedicated his life to helping kids improve in basketball and life and teaching them the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

Meanwhile, Lysa Shead is crucial to the non-profit organization’s sustainability. She not only coaches cheerleading but also handles the vital task of fundraising. Her efforts ensure that the Capital City Youth Association can continue to provide valuable sports programs to Austin’s youth.

How Did Jamal Shead’s Parents Influence His Career In Basketball?

The point guard’s mother had a crucial role in selecting the Houston Cougars for his son, with whom he has made a successful career. Initially, his parents wanted their son to play for the Texas Longhorns, being from Texas.

However, Lysa Shead felt her son needed special training different from others that would help him dominate. At the time, Sampson felt like a family to them; therefore, the parents motivated the point guard to stay and work hard with the team, trusting the process.

Before confirming the coach for her son, the point guard’s mother invited him to dinner to learn more about him. She was satisfied with the Sampson way of coaching later as she found it similar to her husband’s style.

When Jamal was impatient about his career, his parents supported and motivated him to go ahead. They always knew he had something special in him. Additionally, the support has only grown for their son with time as they still message him ahead of the game.

Additionally, Lysa attended his games and motivated the point guard whenever she felt he was not giving his all. After all the hard work, his parents can now enjoy the Houston Cougars point guard’s continuing progress.

Talking about his son’s growth, Elvin Shead expressed to PaperCity, “It’s fun to watch. We’re really enjoying the journey with him. We see it. We see the process that he’s been through with Coach Sampson and his staff. It’s just fun to watch. I want to see not only Jamal’s growth but also all the kids in the program’s growth. It’s there. The program is proven.”

Jamal Shead Grew Up With Two Older Siblings

The NABC Defensive Player of the Year has athleticism in his blood, as every family member is associated with sports. His siblings were the first to introduce him to basketball.

Jamal’s elder brother, Jaylen, had carved his basketball path, playing at Cal Poly and Washington State. Similarly, his sister, Autumn, left her mark at Texas Lutheran with her basketball skills.

However, Jaylen had to retire from basketball early due to a career-ending injury. His game had already made a significant impact on his younger brother. The Houston Cougars point used to idolize his brother, even copying his hairstyle, and later pursued basketball, following his path.

Additionally, basketball is still part of Jaylen’s life. He is a manager and coach for the Washington State University basketball team and is often spotted supporting his brother during his games.

On the other hand, Autumn works as an education coordinator for the Capital City Youth Association. Apart from that, there is not much information about her as she lives a quiet and private life with minimal public life.

During the Houston point guard’s 4th Sweet 16, his sister expressed, “I’m just proud of him. I’m proud of the way all of them have handled it and how Coach Sampson has been pushing them.”
