Payton Sr. was awarded the team’s most exceptional player in 1988 and 1989 while receiving a scholarship at Grambling football.
In three seasons, he recorded 117 tackles (70 solo), 28 tackles for losses, and 16.5 sacks despite never weighing more than 205 pounds.

After participating in a tryout in New Orleans two years after becoming a standout at Grambling, Payton Sr. caught the attention of the Canadian Football League.
