Daryl McCormack’s parents, Afred and Theresa, met for the first time in 1992 when Daryl’s mother, Theresa, was on a holiday in California. Eventually, Theresa got pregnant and returned to Ireland.
Daryl’s mother got no support from Alfred and decided to raise Drayl alone in Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland.
Theresa was in her early twenties when she had Daryl, and they shared a friendly bond over a parent-kid bond. In an interview, Drayl said, “She was young as well, she was in her early 20s when she had me… We could talk to one another like a friend.”

Since Daryl inherited the genes of his African-American father, he looked different from other kids in his surroundings in Ireland as a child.
In a US Storytelling Podcast podcast, Daryl spoke about his childhood: “When I asked my mother why people always stared at me, she would reply: Because you’re so good-looking!”
Though he went through name-calling all the time, people continued looking at him in disgrace, and after so many incidences of bad racist experiences, he still moved on.
He said, “I don’t want to sound like I’m harping on about it because I’ve moved on from the difficulties of forging his identity in the midst of subtle and overt racism in a monocultural town.”
