In addition, Dahal started learning programming languages and getting certifications for different courses. With his new interest in programming, he began building applications and pursued a career in Technology.
However, he was aware of the competition in the market and wanted a relevant degree to pursue his career in Technology. Therefore, in 2002, Dahal joined Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology and received a Master’s in Computer Application.
Additionally, after completing his Master’s program, Tanka completed a Master of Science from Maharishi International University in 2008.
With prior knowledge and relevant qualifications, he started his professional career in technology in 2003 as a Software Developer / Project manager at TechMinds Communication Pvt—Ltd in Kathmandu.
In 2006, he worked as a software development engineer in test at Microsoft for a year before joining WHITTMANHART as a .Net Developer.

According to his wife’s Facebook profile, she studied early childhood education at Lake Washington Institute of Technology—LWTech (2015-17).

With his wife, Padma, Mr. Dahal expanded his family to four as the parent of two wonderful children: a son, AD Dahal, and a daughter, Smriti Dahal.

His daughter, Smriti, studied Computer Science at the University of Washington Bothell (2015-18). Now, she is a software development engineer at Microsoft (2019- present). She is also active on Instagram but keeps her account private.

Dahal is from Bargachhi, a locality in Bhadrapur Municipality of Jhapa, Koshi Province, Nepal. Currently, he resides in Seattle, Washington, the USA.
Born in January 1972, Tanks is currently 52. His wife, Padma, born in March 1975, is three years younger than him and is 49.

In his YouTube channel, during his “Ask Me Anything” session (in the Nepali language), Dahal spoke of his dark childhood and his struggle through his teens and youth days before he got his dream job at Microsoft.
Tanka Dahal grew up alongside his brother in a small village in a moderate family. However, things began to fall away from him after his father left his mother and married his second wife.
As reported, Dahal’s mom lived in the streets and sold vegetables for her living, while Tanka had to live with his father and grandparents.
He was not allowed to meet his mom, but he would go to meet her. As a result, he would get “scolded and beaten” for that on his way back home.
Later, he left home and lived with his mother, where he would do street vending and work as a porter. Despite such challenges, Tanka didn’t leave his studies- he was a bright student.
Moved To Kathmandu And Later To The USA
As reported, shortly after passing his 10th grade, Tanka tutored students in the 10th grade. Later, he moved to Kathmandu, pursued further studies, and completed his BBA. He then pursued his MBA while also working as a teacher.
Also, he was learning computer programming at an institute and felt that computer was his true calling.
However, Tanka stated that “according to the country’s rules, he couldn’t pursue academics computer studies” since he had no background in Mathematics.
In search of opportunities, he applied for higher studies in computer science in the United States and was accepted, which led to his move to the USA.
After his studies, Dahal went for an interview at Microsoft, cracked the interview on the first attempt, and began working as a software developer.
How Many Siblings Does Tanka Dahal Have?
Tanka grew up with his older brother, Subash Dahal, the owner of the Sound World Music Store. He is married to Ranajan Dahal and shares a daughter with her.
Subash occasionally shares pictures with her younger brother, Tanka, on his Facebook profile.
The Microsoft engineer also has a sister named Sila Dahal. She has taught at Siddhartha Boarding Higher Secondary School in Jhapa, Nepal, since 2015. Formerly, she was a Montessori teacher at Clinton School (2007-15).
In November 2023, Tanka shared a picture with his sister, Sila, on the occasion of BhaiTika (a Hindu celebration from the Tihar festival where sisters worship for their brother’s long life).
